The successful candidate must have earned a doctorate in Education; preferably in Reading/Literacy or a related field. Candidate must also have two years of full-time teaching experience in PK-12 classroom settings teaching reading. A thorough knowledge of Reading/Literacy Education is essential along with a commitment to contribute to the field through publications and presentations. Experience forging school partnerships is desirable as is knowledge of the common core curriculum and standards-based assessment.
The mission of LaGrange College's Department of Education is to develop and nurture teachers who have both a strong foundation in the liberal arts and essential knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions regarding both content and pedagogy. LaGrange College offers several professional education programs. These include a preservice B.A. Program in Early Childhood Education; preservice MAT Programs in Middle Grades Education and four content areas of Secondary Education (mathematics, English, history, and biology,); and two advanced degree programs for experienced teachers, a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and an Ed.S. in Teacher Leadership.

Muslim Students Allowed To Pray In Maryland High School If Grades Are Good
A Maryland public school has drawn attention for its attempt to accommodate Muslim students' religious needs.
Parkdale High School in Prince George?s County, Md., has begun to allow a small group of high-achieving Muslim students out of class for about eight minutes each day to pray together on campus, reports the Washington Post.
In order to qualify for the privilege, students must get parental permission and good grades, according to Parkdale Principal Cheryl J. Logan.
The First Amendment protects the separation of church and state, but it guarantees students are allowed to practice their faith, The Tennessean reported in 2012.
Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, told The Tennessean that while schools may restrict how and where students choose to exercise their religious rights, a school may not stop students from doing so.
"Public schools cannot prevent students from expressing religious faith while on school property," she said.
The Department of Education agrees:
It has long been established that schools have the discretion to dismiss students to off-premises religious instruction, provided that schools do not encourage or discourage participation in such instruction or penalize students for attending or not attending. Similarly, schools may excuse students from class to remove a significant burden on their religious exercise, where doing so would not impose material burdens on other students.
Still, the attempts of some American schools to accommodate the prayer needs of Muslim students has been met with resistance from parents of other faiths.
Last year a Green Bay, Wis., school district was criticized for allowing Muslim students, many of them recent immigrants, to use empty classrooms to pray during breaks, according to The Christian Post. And the mere possibility that some Muslim students would be getting similar accommodations in a district in Pennsylvania was enough to draw protest from parents, according to The Patriot-News.
In 2007, a San Diego, Calif., elementary stopped allowing its Muslim students a special prayer break after the effort drew international headlines, according to 10News.
Parkdale High's new measure has drawn the ire of conservative bloggers, like the virulently anti-Islamic Pamela Geller, whose Atlas Shrugs blog referred to the Maryland district's initiative as "Mosqueing the Public School." However, Parkdale's Principal Logan didn't bend to the inflammatory rhetoric.
Logan also said that when the school's plan was implemented, she initially heard grumbling from some Christian teachers, who reportedly told students Parkdale was "a Christian school.? But apparently the issues have since been resolved.
?I?ve been real happy with how we?ve been able to deal with it without it becoming an issue,? Logan said, according to the Washington Post.

Person claiming to be pastor leaves waiter note: ?I give God 10%. Why do you get 18??
A person claiming to be a pastor apparently tried to stiff a waiter on a tip, explaining that their work for God absolved them of having to leave one.
A photo of the receipt, posted to Reddit.com, shows a bill for $34.93 that included an automatic 18 percent gratuity ($6.29) above a blank space for an additional tip.
"I give God 10%," the diner wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip. "Why do you get 18?" The person then wrote "Pastor" above their signature, and an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be.
The Reddit user who submitted the image explained in the comments section that the receipt was part of a total bill of over $200 for a party of 20, which is why the gratuity was automatically added.
?Parties up to eight ... may tip whatever they?d like, but larger parties receive an automatic gratuity," the server wrote. "It?s in the computer, it?s not something I do.?
The server added: ?They had no problem with my service, and told me I was great. They just didn?t want to pay when the time came.?
Scribbling notes on receipts has become something of a trend. Earlier this month, the manager of a North Carolina Red Robin surprised an overdue pregnant woman by comping her meal.
?Once seated, a manager came up to us and started talking,? the woman's husband told Consumerist. ?He was extremely friendly and jokingly asked my wife if this was her last meal before heading to the hospital."
When the check came, a note from the manager next to her portion of the bill read: "MOM 2 BEE GOOD LUC."
?It was a pleasant surprise and made my tired-of-being-pregnant wife a little more cheery," the man said.

Why Ballmer doesn't want Office on the iPad
Over 120 million iPads have sold since their unveiling by the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs in April of 2010, yet Microsoft's flagship Office suite continues to be noticeably absent from the tablet.
But why?
There have been plenty of rumors that an iOS-compatible version of popular applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are in the pipeline, but so far nothing has materialized. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is "happy with the product that we're putting in market" and said it "makes sense on the devices like the Mac and the PC," while at the same time not commenting on the obvious elephant in the room--the lack of iOS support.
If Microsoft wants Office on the iPad, then Office would be on the iPad. The company would even be willing to swallow Apple's 30 percent commission on apps sold through its App Store to make that happen if it were important. But Office is not on iOS because Microsoft doesn't want it there.
This isn't to say that some within Microsoft wouldn't like to see Office on iOS. One source described the prospect of making the suite available to the iPad user base as "a goldmine."
So why no Office for iOS?
There are several reasons. Let's examine a few.
First, making Office available to the tens of millions of iPad owners--many of them business and enterprise users--would seriously harm Microsoft's ability to sell Windows 8-powered tablets, even its own Surface and Surface Pro hardware. Putting Office on the iPad would eliminate one of the key reasons for enterprise to adopt tablets running Windows 8.
One less Windows 8-powered tablet sold means one less Windows license sold.
Several OEM sources have also expressed concern at the prospect of Microsoft releasing a version of Office for iOS, fearing that the move would give the iPad even more traction--if such a thing is possible--and send PC sales into an even steeper tailspin. PC sales are already in an unhappy state, and putting the Office suite on the platform could be a terminal tipping point for the industry as a whole.
Another problem is that Microsoft--at least the Office division--appears to be unfamiliar with the current app model as promoted by Apple. Microsoft is comfortable with pushing out a new version of Office every few years, having it replace the older version. But this is not how apps work, and buyers--consumers and enterprise alike--like the new model of buying an app once and then receiving a continuous trickle of free updates over time.
Embracing apps would mean embracing a new way of doing business.
This is why we don't have the Office suite on our iPads.
