Self-Leadership for a Successful Career: Advice from John Baldoni ...

John Baldoni is a leadership development consultant, executive coach, and author of twelve books on topics such as communication, managing your boss, motivation, inspiring results, executive presence, and personal leadership?he has expert insight into the issues top leaders face at work every day.
His most recent book, The Leader?s Pocket Guide: 101 Indispensable Tools, Tips, and Techniques for any Situation, has a fantastic quote on page 50 that is relevant to many of our readers:

?Exert your ownership. If your boss is not giving you feedback, ask for it. If your teammates are driving you crazy, talk to them. If you are struggling with an impossible workload, find ways to lighten it. Proceeding as you are is inefficient; failing to address the problem may even be worse. Bottom line: You have a responsibility to do the job for which you are paid. Do it.?

Here is his advice for six of the most common questions we receive from readers on The Fast Track.

1. ?Don?t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.?

Questions about workload are so very common for early career leaders: ?I have too much work to do, I don?t have enough work to do, I don?t like the work I am being given, I am being given more and more responsibilities, there is a crunch to do more with less for same pay.? We?ve all been there at one point or another, right?

John Baldoni: ?Don?t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do;? that quote is from a legendary basketball coach who died at the ripe old age of 99. In other words, stop focusing on the negatives and instead look to what you can accomplish.

2. Hold to your values, but you will not win every battle.

Sooner or later, we all encounter a trust issue, an interpersonal conflict, or a simple disagreement with our boss or a higher-up. What shift in perspective is required to deal with it well?

JB: Young people have a strong sense of right and wrong. Trust your instincts. Hold to your values. At the same time, understand that the world does not orbit around you? unless of course you are a self-absorbed celebrity. You need to be straight with people. Understand also that you will not win every battle. Also life is unfair. You will be misunderstood as well as judged unfairly. No excuses for that but it is the way the world works.

At the same time you owe your employer and your boss deference. You commit to the job and you do your best. You and your boss may disagree and you should always be able to voice your ideas as well as your concerns. At the same time, you likely will not win one tenth of your arguments. Learn from this. And if you are not comfortable with the boss?s ethics, then sooner or later you must leave. Find where your values and your employer?s are compatible.

3. Assume that you must prove yourself.

Unfortunately, some people are difficult to work with. What is the professional way to react when someone feels they are not being treated with respect at work?

JB: First of all, you act like a professional. Assume that you must prove yourself. Take the high road and do not get into the gutter. At the same time consider the source. If it is your boss, maybe he or she has a point. You are still learning. Ask for feedback on your performance. Consider how you can make positive changes to improve.

4. Never act like the smartest person in the room.

What are mistakes that young leaders tend to make?

JB: See my Forbes column article, never act like the smartest person in the room. No one likes a show off. Let your example ? your competence and your work ? speak for itself. No need to brag.

5. Focus on getting things done the right way.

What should leaders know about office politics?

JB: Politics is the art of possibility. Things are accomplished by working through and with colleagues, even people you may personally not want to spend time outside of work with. Focus on getting things done the right way.

At the same time, politics as it relates to gossip and back-stabbing is deplorable. Don?t engage in it. Again stick on the high side of the road. And if people come at you with it, refuse to play. You are not in high school any more.

6. If you pay attention you will become wise.

What is your advice for young professionals hoping to develop their leadership skills and have a successful career?

JB: Give yourself a big pat on the back. You have accomplished a great deal. What you lack is experience. That only comes with doing the job over time. If you pay attention you will become wise. Wisdom and age are not synonymous, but if you pay attention you will learn a great deal.

Where is Tornado Alley?

Blog

You may see the above chart with our preliminary finding that "tornado alley" (the gray shaded area) runs from Oklahoma City to Atlanta, and think we have it oriented the wrong way.? Traditionally, "tornado alley" has been defined as the Great Plains of the United States, from Texas up through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa.? However, our research at UAH, in coordination with P. Grady Dixon at Mississippi State University, shows otherwise.

We want to show where the area with the greatest risk for tornadoes is.? The Storm Prediction Center's tornado database goes all the way back to 1950, and includes almost every reported tornado since then.? However, there are some biases in that data that must be addressed first.

1.? Unreported tornadoes

The charts below show a) the total number of reported tornadoes, by year, in the U.S. since 1950, and b) the number of reported "significant" tornadoes, or those rated F2 through F5.

Figure 2
Note that the number of total reported tornadoes has been increasing for 60 years.? This is because many tornadoes, especially small, weak ones, used to go unreported.? Events changed our awareness of tornadoes:??Tornado research in the 1950's; developing a spotter network in the 1960's and 1970's;?Doppler radar?in the 1990's to tell us where to look; and then almost no tornado goes unreported anymore with widespread towercams and cameras on cell phones.? The number of reported tornadoes has gone up.? They were always there, we just did not know about a lot of them.? Especially the weak ones., especially in the southeastern U.S. where trees and?mountains block the view, and about half of all tornadoes occur at night.

The bottom chart shows reported significant tornadoes per year.? Notice they have been much more steady.? F2-F5 tornadoes are wider, last longer, and do more damage than F0-F1 tornadoes, so it is unlikely for very many of those to go unreported.? That is apparently the case, since the number of reported F2-F5 tornadoes has been steady or actually dropped.? So, in our study, we only use significant tornadoes, a steady dataset.

2.? Over-estimated tornadoes

Notice in the lower chart that the number of significant tornadoes decreased suddenly?after 1973.? The Fujita scale was invented in the early 1970's, and tornadoes 1950-1972 were rated retroactively, using newspaper clippings, etc. that, according to some researchers in Oklahoma (e.g., Schaefer and Edwards 1999; Brooks and Craven 2002), likely biased the damage estimates upward.? Therefore, in our study, we only look at data since 1973, since tornadoes were rated on the Fujita scale in near real-time.

3.? Results

The map below uses GIS software and the database of all significant (F2-F5) tornadoes, 1973-2011, to show the total path length (in km) of significant tornadoes, within 25 miles of a point, averaged annually.

Figure 4
Clearly, the largest threat for significant tornadoes since 1973 has been over Arkansas, Mississippi, and north and central Alabama, with a moderate threat extending from central Oklahoma to NW Georgia.?? The above map is influenced somewhat by the jumbo outbreak of April 27, 2011, but using data 1973-2010 shows a similar overall pattern.

Some may argue that significant tornadoes go unreported in Texas or Nebraska, or are under-rated because they only hit open grassland.? However, the number of tornado watches and warnings issued over the past 10-20 years shows that conditions were favorable for tornadoes, or tornadoes were indicated on radar, in roughly the same areas that our statistics show as tornado alley.? See below.

Figure 7
(Average annual number of tornado watches by county, SPC)

Figure 8
(Number of tornado warnings per year by location.? Marsh 2012)

There are other statistics that we use to show that our data are correct, but I will reserve those for the peer-reviewed journal article we will be submitting this spring.? That means these results are preliminary and have not been peer-reviewed.? However, you can be the judge of where tornado alley should be.?

The concern is more nuclear testing by North Korea, but:

Samsung's WiFionly Galaxy passes governmental inspection, bids farewell to SIM cards

Two days is a long time in tech. One day, a company's announcing a new iteration of its hybrid Android camera, next thing you know, it's already passing the FCC's tests. You probably know the drill by now and with even less radios than the original Galaxy Camera, there's less paperwork to browse this round. But if exposure reports are your sort of thing, then you should probably visit the source -- there's reading to be done. Two things not mentioned, however, is that darn release date and price tag.
